What does your Twitter bio say about you?  Before you answer, take a long hard look at it and put yourself in the shoes of a complete stranger.  Could they tell what benefits your business would bring to them? Would they know where you are based? Would they want to connect with you?

Your Twitter bio is your Twitter shop window.  If it’s not right, then you won’t get the followers you want and need.

Here’s a handy check list of features to get right:

1)  If you can, make your avatar a picture of yourself not your logo.  Twitter is all about people, and users respond to faces more readily than other images.  You’ll be showing a personal commitment to your followers if you show your face.

2)  Make sure your bio explains the benefit of your business to your follower base.  They want to know what you do, but they’re much more interested in what you can do for them.  So if you’re an interior designer, for example, your bio could read ‘a designer who creates rooms you’ll love to live in’ instead of ‘a designer who creates beautiful rooms’.

3)  If you’re’ a B2B business you could consider including your Linkedin profile link in your bio.  This will give users an easy way to find out more about you, and possibly connect.

4)  Make sure you include your website (not often forgotten, but I’ve seen it happen).

5)  Put your location in the location field when you create your account (or add it later if you’ve not done it already).  Even if your business serves customers nationally or internationally, people still like to know where you are based.  It makes you seem like a real person, not just a company, and you’ll have more chance of connecting with other people locally as well.

And finally, you can change your Twitter bio as often as you like.  You’ve got 140 characters to play with, so go for it!  You could experiment with different formats and see whether your follower numbers go up or down.  Enjoy.
